Introduction :

Homogeneous catalysts are typically used in the manufacture of Plasticisers, acrylates and polyesters

  • Plasticisers : Royce International products can boost plant throughput of Phthalates, adipated and trimellitates by more than 50% compared with conventional systems. They can produce plasticizers with low color and high purity giving you the potential to achieve higher added value. These environmentally friendly catalysts minimize plant corrosion and waste disposal costs.
  • Acrylates : Royce International products can substantially increase the rate of transesterification processes giving substantial economic benefits. They eliminate unwanted side reactions, giving higher purity final products. Royce International catalysts for acrylate manufacture may also be recycled.
  • Polyesters : Royce International products are used as efficient catalysts in the production of saturated and unsaturated polyesters. They are free flowing liquids and are easy to handle.

Applications :

Royce International’s homogenous catalysts are typically formulated around esters of the hypothetical titanic acid [Ti(OH)4]. The products catalyze three main classes of esterification reaction: direct, trans and polyesterification.

Direct Esterification : This is the reaction between-a carboxylic acid and an alcohol to produce an ester plus water.

An example of direct esterification is in the manufacture of the plasticiser bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DOP) from phthalic anhydride where the Royce International catalyst accelerates the second reaction stage.

Transesterification : This is a reaction where the alkoxy group of an existing ester is exchanged with that of another, higher alcohol to form the new ester product.

Many higher acrylates and methacrylates are manufactured from the readily available methyl esters. N butyl methracylate can be produced through such a mechanism.

Polyesterification : This is typically the reaction of a diacid or diester with a diol. The reaction may be accomplished in two stage comprising a direct esterification (DE) or transesterification (TE) to form the 'monomer' followed by a polycondensation (PC) to give the final polymer. The manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) by the reaction of terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol is an example of direct esterification followed by polycondensation.
