POLYMER ADDITIVES

1. Flame Retardant

  • These are available in concentrate and in some cases need to be pre-compounded. The concentrates can be used to help FR regrind product meet UL specs.  The cost and amount needed depends on the type of rating if any required

2. Functional Concentrates

2.1 UV Inhibitors:

  • Available for PS, PE, PP, ASA and other widely used products.  The additive can be incorporated into a color as a UV package or sold separately. UV inhibitors have a slight effect on stabilizing color but their main property is protecting the resin and keeping it from yellowing and finally breaking down.  The level of UV protection needed is dependent on the type of exposure the end product will be subjected to.  Typically, most people look for 2-3 years outdoor protection.  This can be achieved in most resins.  Other’s most notably ABS cannot achieve that exposure time, and must be substituted with another resin such as ASA.

2.2 Slip and Anti-Block:

  • These are typically found in film extrusion applications. They keep polyethylene from sticking to itself in bag applications.

2.3 Anti-Stats:

  • Used in several applications.  They prevent the build-up of static electricity during processing and finished product handling.  When used in a houseware application they prevent the build-up of dust on the product when it is on the shelf.  Also used to prevent pellets from sticking to hoppers and disrupting the concentrate blend ratio.  Can be sold as a separate product but is more often incorporated into a color concentrate.

2.4 Mold Release:

  • These are fast bloom additives that enhance the ability of a product to release from the mold. They can also enable mold packing if a processor is experiencing “short shots”. The product does remain on the surface and can have a negative effect on screen printing and any other type of printing that may be performed on the finished product.

2.5 Static Dissipaters:

  • Typically found in Nylon, they carry off static electricity. They will impart either a black or beige color to the natural product

2.6 Conductive Compounds:

  • These products are designed to carry a certain level of static electricity.

2.7 Clarifiers:

  • Used in polypropylene. This product adds greater clarity to either a standard PP Homopolymer or even clarified PP.
