History

In 1929 Royce was founded to manufacture chemicals for textile industry in a plant in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Our first products were Sodium Hydrosulfite, Sodium Formaldehyde Sulfoxylate and Zinc Formaldehyde Sulfoxylate.

In 2004, 75 years later, we are still supplying the products which formed the foundation of our company. But Royce of today is an international company with alliances and offices in several locations around this world.

Some of the key milestones in our history are as follows:
 

1929

The Royce Chemical Company was founded by Albert J. Royce, Sr. as a Textile  Chemical Manufacturing Concern. Its primary products were Sodium Hydrosulfite, Sodium Formaldehyde Sulfoxylate and Zinc Formaldehyde Sulfoxylate. Royce has remained in the production of Reductive Chemicals for over 70 years.
 

1977

Royce built a Zinc Powder plant to supply itself this key raw material for it’s Hydro plant, as well as sell it to the major alkaline battery manufacturers.
 

1977

Royce purchased Passaic Color and Chemical, putting it in the dyestuff business for Plastics, Paper, Leather, and Textiles industries.
 

1978

Royce built an Indigo Dispersion plant and began supplying several major U.S. denim mills.
 

1979

Royce built a Vat Dye grinding and blending plant to supply the major U.S. towel mills.
 

1980

American Cyanamid shut down its Dyestuff plant and Royce began to toll manufacture for them.
 

1981

Royce sold its Hydrosulfite plant to Virginia Chemicals Division of Cleanese. Royce continued as a Dyestuff company and Zinc Powder manufacturer.
 

1986

Royce built a Plastic Recycling Plant.
 

1987

Royce sold its technology and alkaline battery market for Zinc Powder to Noranda Corporation, a multi-billion dollar Canadian Natural Resources Company.
 

1989

Royce changed its Plastic Recycling plant and began to manufacture Color Concentrates.
 

1990

Royce began manufacturing micronized waxes for the Ink, Coatings, and Plastics Industries.
 

1995

Transferred Phenalkamine Resin technology and formed a strategic alliance with Cibatul, a former joint venture of Ciba-Geigy, in India.
 

1996

Royce opened offices in Tainjin, China, and New Delhi, India.
 

1996

Royce formed Royce International, creating additional strategic alliances throughout Europe and Asia.
 

1997

Royce sold its micronized Wax Business to Lawter International, which today is owned by Eastman Chemical.
 

1997

Cibatul grants Royce exclusive marketing rights for its Epoxy Resins and Epoxy Hardeners in North America.
 

2000

Royce introduced innovative bleaching systems to Pulp and Paper industry.
 

2001

Royce is a Multi-Divisional Enterprise selling and manufacturing throughout the world. 
 

2002

Royce ventures into the Latin America countries looking to become a leading exporter of Indigo, Sodium Hydrosulfite and Sulphur Dyes.
 

2003

Royce receives a patent for high performance reductive chemicals for the paper industry.
 

2004

Royce expands operations in China to sell products in China.
