Bisphenol

Royce International has been a leading chemical manufacturer and supplier since 1929. It is a company that prides itself on the ability to continuously provide efficient service and cost effective products to its clients by being proactive in its stance. It has become a world leader offering the highest quality products at the most competitive prices by keeping up with technology and constantly developing innovative solutions to meet its markets' needs. It continues to grow having expanded into five production facilities with the growth of its customers who include the adhesives, wood, pulp and paper, automotive, electronics, pharmaceutical, rubber, composite, textile, construction, paint and coating, waste water treatment, precious metal recovery, inks, ceramics, polymer and plastics, glass, leather and candle industries. Products supplied by Royce International include sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate, epoxy resins containing bisphenol, phenalkamines, curing agents, reactive diluents, zinc borate, specialty chemicals and much more.

One of its leading manufacturing units is the epoxy resins which are utilized in the construction and concrete, adhesives, composites, electrical and electronics and paint and coatings markets. The epoxy resins are manufactured in its laboratories by technical staff capable of developing new products, transferring technology and up-scaling laboratory production to pilot scale and full production. These epoxy resins include bisphenol A type liquid solid resins, brominated epoxy resins, epoxy phenol novolac resins, bisphenol F epoxy resin and multifunctional epoxy resins and are available at www.royceintl.com. Although the use of bisphenol has become controversial due to its negative effects on human and environmental health, it is still used to make epoxy resins because scientists have not found a suitable replacement for this compound.

Bisphenol is an organic compound that contains two phenol functional groups that contribute as building blocks to several important polymers and polymer additives. It is chemically synthesized by a condensation reaction and was first reported by A. P. Dianin in 1891. Today, bisphenol is commonly used as a key monomer in the production of polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. It can also be used in polyesters, polysulfones and polyether ketones as well as an antioxidant in plasticizers and as a polymerization inhibitor in PVC. The plastics containing bisphenol are used in many food and drink applications whilst the resins are commonly used as lacquers to coat metal products such as food cans, bottle tops and water supply pipes.

Unfortunately, the ester bond that links bisphenol monomers to one another to form a polymer is not stable and the polymer decays with time, releasing bisphenol into materials with which it comes into contact with for example food and water. Although bisphenol has a low acute toxicity and a negligible skin permeability, it has been associated with hormone disrupting effects which can lead to additional health problems in humans. Several groups of plastic polymers containing bisphenol are safe for use as they do not result in bisphenol leaching while others are not suited to applications exposed to humans. Safe bisphenol containing polymers include high density polyethylene, low density polyethylene and polypropylene while polymers prone to bisphenol leaching include polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride and polypropylene. Royce International conforms to all environmental and customer standards and all its epoxy resins get tested in its laboratories. www.royceintl.com has a list of products available for your needs.
